Durham, North Carolina-based firm Cree, Inc. has introduced a new High Efficacy (HE) version of the XLamp® XP-G2 LED.
The company says that the new high-efficiency version offers both higher output and increased efficiency to enable smaller, lighter, lower-cost designs. According to Cree, the original XLamp XP-G2 LED has since served as a preferred choice for manufacturers that require superior output, efficacy and optical control.
Furthermore, Cree says that the XLamp XP-G2 LED pioneered a broad set of LED applications for the industry, including outdoor and area lighting. The company asserts that the new XP-G2 HE improves upon this legacy by providing a drop-in upgrade for existing XP-G2 LED systems. This drop-in upgradability lets designers quickly implement Cree’s newest Dmax™ high-power LED chip technology while preserving the outstanding color quality and optical control required for applications including outdoor, indoor, architectural and portable lighting.
Despite being the same footprint as the original, the HE version looks very different than the original in its design sporting the latest Cree LED chip technology.
“Our architectural and high-end outdoor lighting products are used in very demanding environments where long lifetime and perfect light output are required,” said Dante Cariboni, CEO of Cariboni Group. “The quality of light and optical control of the XLamp® XP-G2 LED make it the ideal light source for our designs to meet these tough requirements. Cree’s new XP-G2 HE enables us to easily upgrade existing designs for greater efficacy and exceptional color quality.”
Improvements in Performance
A higher maximum current of 2000 mA plus up to 9 percent higher efficacy along with lower thermal resistance give the XP-G2 HE 25 percent greater output than the original. The new 3.45 mm by 3.45 mm XP-G2 HE comes with a 125-degree beam angle instead of 120-degree beam angle and also features an improved thermal resistance of 3 °C/W compared to 4 °C/W for the original.
“The XLamp® XP-G2 LED served as a breakthrough product that enabled a broad set of new LED applications. Today, Cree continues our commitment to make our latest LED technology available in form factors that are easy for our customers to use while enabling smaller, lighter, lower-cost designs and delivering the color quality that Cree is known for,” said Dave Emerson, executive vice president and general manager, Cree LEDs. “Cree’s new XP-G2 HE further strengthens the industry’s best 3.45 mm high-power LED portfolio, which delivers leading lumen density and reliability for high-power general lighting applications.”
Cree has made product samples available, and production quantities are available with standard lead times.
