Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. of Malvern, Pennsylvania USA has introduced a new high-speed silicon PIN photodiode with enhanced sensitivity for visible light. The new photodiode comes in a 5 mm by 4 mm top-view, surface-mount package with a depth of just 0.9 mm. The Vishay says that the VEMD5080X01 provides fast switching times and low capacitance for precise signal detection in wearable devices as well as medical, industrial, and automotive applications.
The device offers a large radiant-sensitive area of 7.5 mm² and high radiant sensitivity with a reverse light current of 45 µA and dark current of 0.2 nA. The new photodiode detects visible and near-infrared radiation over a broad sensitivity range of 350 nm to 1100 nm. Vishay contends that the responsiveness (sensitivity) of the VEMD5080X01 to light from green LEDs is 30 % greater than the previous-generation solutions.
When used with its VLMTG1400 green LED, the photodiode’s small size and sensitivity reportedly enable slimmer size for wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smart watches.
Vishay says that when combined with its VSMD66694 660 nm and 940 nm dual color emitting diodes, the device can be employed for SpO2 measurement in medical monitors. In addition, the photodiode can offer high-speed photo detection in smoke detectors with dual-wavelength light sources as well as when they are combined with automotive dust and particle sensors and a red diode.
With a 950 nm wavelength of peak sensitivity, the VEMD5080X01 features a ± 65° angle of half-sensitivity, and can operate in the broad temperature range of -40 °C to +110 °C. The robust, halogen-free device is RoHS-compliant and tested to AEC-Q101 standards for Automotive Grade semiconductors.The photodiode has a moisture sensitivity level (MSL) of 4 in accordance with the J-STD-020 standard for a floor life of 72 hours. Wettable flanks allow for optical solder joint inspection.
Samples and production quantities of the VEMD5080X01 are now available. Large orders require lead times of eight to ten weeks. Pricing for U.S. delivery starts at $0.51 per piece.
