Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. of Malvern, Pennsylvania USA introduced a new ceramic-based, high-power UV LED with silicone lens. Vishay designed the new UV LED to offer a reliable and energy efficient replacement for mercury lamps. The VLMU5200-385-140 comes in a 5.2 mm by 5.2 mm by 3.1 mm surface-mount package for industrial, medical, and printing applications. The UV LED boasts an exceptionally long lifetime. The silicone lens helps the UV LED achieve an extremely long lifetime compared to UV mercury lamps.
The environmentally friendly UV LED contains no heavy metals. The company says that the UV LED offers shock resistance and immunity to degradation from frequent on / off switching. Unlike conventional UV mercury lamps that require complex drive circuits and require warm up time of 2 to 15 minutes, theVLMU5200-385-140 requires no warm up period and allows the use of simple low-voltage circuitry.
The company based the device on indium gallium nitride (InGaN) technology. In a wavelength range between 380 nm and 390 nm, it delivers typical radiant power of 2500 mW at 500 mA and 3600 mW at 700 mA. The VLMU5200-385-140 delivers radiant intensity of 1054 mW/sr at 700 mA and has a wide emission angle of 140°.
Vishay says that the LED’s features make it ideal for UV curing in dental, nail salon, and poster printing applications; counterfeit money and blood detection; and photocatalytic purification. The Vishay Green, RoHS-compliant and halogen-free VLMU5200-385-140 is compatible with reflow soldering processes and has a Moisture Sensitivity Level of 2 in accordance with J-STD-020.
Vishay has made samples of the new UV LED available immediately, and production quantities are available with lead times of six to eight weeks.
