Osram Opto and Institute for Semiconductor Technology at Braunschweig University of Technology Open Epitaxy Competency Center for GaN R&D

Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH and Institute for Semiconductor Technology at
Braunschweig University of Technology have opened the Epitaxy Competency Center
(Ec2) after many cooperative projects including the European Union’s project
GECCO. In that project the joint team created a so-called “3D nano-LED” for
white light.

The ec² will serve as a gallium nitride research center, offering access to
an outstanding research platform for GaN materials for optoelectronics, LED and
laser technologies, power electronics, and sensors. In addition to developing
production (epitaxy) processes, the center plans to systematically develop the
infrastructure for nano-analysis and processing. The center is looking to
improve performance and lower the cost of production

Aldo Kamper, Osram Opto Semiconductors CEO pointed out that technological
development towards even greater performance and lower cost of production has
to go faster, and going faster requires that industry and academia work
together closely in research projects such as those at the ec² . Kamper pointed
out that the employees of such centers combine enormous expertise and thus form
a pool of talent in the field of semiconductor technology, which German
industry needs.
