Cree More than Doubles Performance with New XP-L High Intensity Line of LEDs

Cree, Inc. has announced the new XLamp® XP-L High Intensity LED. “High intensity,” according to Cree’s leader of product marketing for LED components, Paul Scheidt, refers to “sending a lot of light over a long distance.” Such high intensity is particularly important in applications such as stadium lighting, outdoor lighting, and track lighting. Cree boasts that the XLamp XP-L High Intensity is the first single-die LED to offer 100,000 candela from a 50mm diameter optic at 10 watts.

Cree built the XP-L High Intensity, based on its SC5 Technology Platform with a design that maximizes candela and light density. Paul noted that the design employs secondary optics to help maximize candela. The SC5 platform uses the company’s silicon carbide technology, which allows the LEDs to operate at a higher temperature for increased lumen output from the same footprint.

The new High Intensity XP-L LED provides more than double the candelas compared to the LED with the previous candela record, the original XP-L LED. It comes in the same 3.45 mm x 3.45 mm package as the original version and gives users a drop-in ready upgrade for XP-based luminaire designs.

According to Cree, the High Intensity XP-L can boost performance and reduce size, which results in a lower system cost. The higher light output reduces the number of required LEDs lowering system cost, and the ability to operate at higher temperatures reduces the size of required heat sinks lower cost of materials and system cost. The company’s new primary optic design greatly reduces the optical source size by more than 50 percent.  The smaller size optical source in turn reduces the size of the optics such as lenses and also lowers system cost.

Samples of the XP-L High Intensity are available now and production quantities are available with standard lead times.
