Lumileds has launched its third generation of Chip on Board (CoB) arrays, the Luxeon Core Range (Gen 3). The company says that the Luxeon Core Range Gen 3 offers 10% higher efficacy at constant flux compared to previous generations. Lumileds engineered all Luxeon CoB LEDs to provide the highest flux from the smallest light emitting surface (LES).
“This performance upgrade is the result of significant improvements in both die development and our industry-leading phosphor solutions that give us industry-leading performance,” said Eric Senders, Product Line Director for the Luxeon CoB Family.
According to Lumileds, the Gen 3 Luxeon CoB upgrade spans its full range of products from the Luxeon CoB 1202s with the smallest LES of 6.5 mm for cost-effective spotlights to the Luxeon CoB 1216s with an LES of 23 mm for efficient replacement of 100-150W HIDs in indoor or outdoor applications. The Luxeon CoB Core Range covers the widest range of color temperatures from 2200K to 5700K with CRIs of 70, 80, or 90.
Lumileds says the LED array’s substrate has thermal resistance which is up to 4X lower than other commercial products, contributing to its superior performance. The company notes that the lowest thermal resistance allows smaller heat sinks and optics, enabling lower system cost.
The company hot tests all of its Luxeon CoB Core Range (Gen 3) arrays at 85°C to ensure performance in real world operating conditions and to minimize the need for additional testing. The Luxeon CoB Core Range (Gen 3) products are fully compatible with the Luxeon CoB Gen 1 and Gen 2 arrays. The company says its ecosystem of compatible drivers, optics and holders helps speed the time-to-market of all directional lamps.
