Tridonic Jennersdorf GmbH, a subsidiary of Tridonic GmbH & Co KG, Dornbirn and part of the Zumtobel Group, has filed a lawsuit against Ingram Micro Distribution GmbH of Germany in Munich Disctrict Court. The lawsuit alleges that Ingram Micro Distribution sells smartphones from HTC of Taiwan which infringe patents owned by the B.O.S.E. consortium of which Tridonic is a member.
Along with with Toyoda Gosei, Ltd. based in Japan and German firms Leuchtstoffwerk Breitungen GmbH and Litec GbR, Tridonic Jennersdorf GmbH makes up the B.O.S.E. Consortium which owns fundamental patents for the technology that generates white light using blue LEDs and yellow silicate phosphors.
Tridonic first initiated patent lawsuits against telecommunication retailer S-KON eKontor24 GmbH in 2017. Tridonic says that although the District Court Munich affirmed its reasoning, the companies subsequently agreed on a settlement of the dispute. According to Tridonic, Ingram Micro Distribution GmbH is an additional HTC smartphone supplier identified in the previous lawsuit.
Silicate-based White LED Technology Used in High Brightness and High Accuracy LEDs
Tridonic notes that silicate-based white LED technology enables the fabrication of white LEDs with high accuracy and high brightness. Primary applications of such LEDs include their use in smartphones, laptops, GPS systems and other display products. Therefore, Tridonic says that this technology is relevant to current markets.
The B.O.S.E. Consortium offers licensing arrangements to use this white LED technology, thereby making it available to the LED industry. Tridonic also pointed out that the B.O.S.E. Consortium has already concluded licensing agreements with more than 40 LED makers worldwide.
