Osram Opto Semiconductors of Regensburg, Germany has joined the ISELED Alliance. The ISELED Alliance, an open alliance which was founded in 2016, plans to provide the technology that enables smart RGB LEDs for automotive interior lighting. The Alliance is developing the complete ecosystem for a smart RGB LED including the RGB LED module, the LED controller, and software. The modules integrate the RGB LEDs, the LED controller, and a communications link in a single 3mm package.
The alliance created a digital LED controller chip that integrates with an RGB LED in the form of a smart RGB module that can be daisy-chained together with up to 4096 LEDs Each module holds its own LED calibration data, resulting in a considerable cost reduction.
Each LED controller features a simple two-wire interface and offers embedded temperature compensation. Also, the controller provides a full diagnostic capability for functional lighting in automobiles. Unlike conventional LED modules, the smart RGB LEDs have no binning classes and use no bar coding. Furthermore, LED calibration data is stored in the LED module itself. So, no lookup tables are needed. Overall, the technology enables system assembly of linked modules from the tape with guaranteed performance parameters.
According to the alliance, the module enables bi-direction communication between the micro-controller and the LED module with the lowest possible latency. The module’s robust design resists electromagnetic interference (EMI) and is based on 2 Mbit/s communication with no dedicated clock. The communication uses bandwidth efficiently because each LED is individually addressed.
Other members of the ISELED Alliance now include Dominant Opto Technologies, Inova Semiconductors, Lucie Labs, Melexis Inspired Engineering, NXP Semiconductors, Olsa, TE Connectivity, Valeo, and Display Lab.
Osram Opto Semiconductors soon plans to introduce smart RGB LED modules to the market.
