GE Lighting and Cooledge Lighting Collaborate on LED Light Sheets SSLDesign News Staff
April 24, 2013...GE Lighting of East Cleveland, Ohio USA, has entered a joint-development
agreement with Cooledge Lighting Inc. to develop a customized GE Lightech LED
power-supply driver. The GE Lightech LED power supply driver will serve as a
key component in Cooledge's first full range of LED light sheet solutions for
fixture companies, which debut this week at the LightFair International trade
show in Philadelphia (Cooledge Lighting booth 3712 and GE Lighting booth 2101).
Cooledge is a venture backed startup based in Vancouver, British Columbia
Canada.
GE Lighting's joint-development agreement with Cooledge Lighting also
includes the development of high performance LED phosphors and LED solutions
targeting a wide range of commercial applications including signage and retail
refrigeration applications.
"Our technology and application teams appreciate the range of
possibilities enabled by this new LED form factor," says Maryrose
Sylvester, president & CEO, GE Lighting. "These Cooledge light sheets
advance the art of light fixture design by combining the application features
of organic light emitting diodes with the cost and performance of LED
technology."
Cooledge's flexible LED light sheets are engineered to provide high-quality
lighting utilizing a highly dense pattern of LEDs on a thin plastic substrate.
The unique form factor of Cooledge's LED light sheets allows large panels, long
lengths and the ability to conform to a wide variety of shapes--eliminating
many of the constraints and challenges imposed by traditional LED lighting
options. Luminaire designs using the LED light sheets can be fluid and minimal,
also permitting unique material choices in many cases. Based on Cooledge's
patented technology, this new medium of light requires no additional
heat-sinking or thermal management.

Samsung Introduces New, High Efficacy Chip on Board LED Packages LIGHTimes News Staff
April 23, 2013...Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has introduced a new 129lm/W high efficiency, chip-on-board (COB) family of LED packages, LC013/26/40B. The LC013/26/40B series features a compact light emitting surface (LES), designed for use in high performance indoor and outdoor lighting, and ideally suited for spotlight applications.
The series, features a 129lm/W light efficacy at 80 CRI (Color Rendering Index) and 5000K CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) and is available in 2700K, 3000K and 4000K versions. Samsung says that by adopting chip-on-board technology that utilizes metal core PCBs, the new COB family offers outstanding color uniformity and light quality, while achieving a high luminous flux of up to 6000lm in a single LED package.
“Samsung proudly presents its new 13,26, and 40W, 129 lm/W high performance COB package family, based on our world class chip and phosphor technology,” said Jaap Schlejen, senior vice president, LED lighting sales and marketing, Samsung Electronics. “The new COB family, is designed to meet Zhaga specifications, and has a low thermal resistance and superior heat dissipation for high reliability.”
The Samsung COB family will be available in May. Further additions to Samsung’s COB package lineup will be made later this year, to offer even more options for customers.
The Samsung’s COB family will be displayed at LIGHTFAIR International 2013 (Booth #2645) in Philadelphia from April 23rd-25th.
LED Engin Introduces Tunable CRI 90 white LED for Black Body Dimming from 3000K to 1800K LIGHTimes News Staff
April 23, 2013...LED Engin, Inc., of San Jose, California USA, a announced immediate
availability of LuxiTune, a compact, single emitter light engine that delivers
directional light with halogen-style dimming. LuxiTune reportedly hugs the
black body curve from 3000K down to1800K. Luminous flux is 1100 lumens,
equivalent to a 60W halogen lamp. Luminous efficacy is 63 lumens per Watt hot
and includes the secondary, TIR optic. The company contends that this is far
higher efficacy than that of rival products that utilize multiple emitters and
reflectors. At full intensity, color rendering index (CRI) is 90 and LuxiTune
maintains a CRI average of 85 and R9 red content of 70 as it dims. LuxiTune has
a diameter of 50mm. According to LED Engin, LuxiTune allows lighting designers
to quickly and easily create a compact lighting fixture that works with
standard 0-10V dimmers or via a DMX interface.
The LuxiTune light engine is comprised of a 12-die. The die are matched to
within 3 MacAdam ellipses (SDCM) and dimming tracks the black body curve to
within three SDCM, producing what LED Engin describes as consistent, natural
light across the full dimming and CCT range. LuxiTune employs a multi-layer
ceramic substrate that the company claims minimizes the package thermal
resistance and provides an almost stress-free environment for the chips
providing effective heat dissipation and maximum light emission. LED Engin says
that these features ensure that color point stability is maintained throughout
the product’s long service life. Optics are available in 24°, 32° and 45°
beam angles. Furthermore, the company says that the lenses facilitate
uniformity over angle, maximize lumens in the beam while minimizing glare and
produce a gentle roll-off profile at the beam edges.
President and CEO of LED Engin, David Tahmassebi, commented, “Our
customers in the hospitality and high-end residential sectors have been eager
for an LED-based lighting solution that tunes along the black body as it dims
while leveraging our strengths in lumen density and lux-on-target performance.

Bridgelux Announces Commercial Availability of Vero LED Arrays LIGHTimes News Staff
April 18, 2013...Bridgelux, announced the commercial availability of the VeroTM LED array.
Vero will also be showcased at the LightFair International exhibition April
23-25 in Philadelphia. The new Vero LED arrays have a 20 percent higher lumen output than
existing Bridgelux LED arrays, and operate at 110 lumens per watt in typical
efficacy, compared to 95 lumens per watt for conventional arrays.
According to Bridgelux, Vero allows lamp and luminaire manufacturers to
optimize any combination of efficiency, cost, and light density, based on
application specific design requirements. The array has a radial di pattern for
improved lumen density and beam control. It also has thermally isolated solder
pads as well as a solder-less connector port. Vero’s connector port
interfaces with the Molex Pico-EZmateTM connector for what Bridgelux describes
as simple plug & play solder-free electrical interconnectivity and field
upgradability.
The Vero Array comes in four different form factors for interior and
exterior applications. The Vero array has lumen output ranging from 400 to
15,000 lumens, and comes with correlated color temperatures of 2700K to 5000K.
The array are available in 70, 80, 90, and 97 CRI varieties. The array can
operate at up to 2x the rated drive current.

Osram Adds White Multi-Chip Ostar Stage LED to Spotlight Range LIGHTimes News Staff
April 3, 2013...Osram Opto Semiconductors has added the Osram Ostar Stage LEDs. The LEDs
with a low profile design and a glass cover provide 390 lumens in cold white
(10000K) and 210 lumens in warm white (2700K). The low profile and high
brightness, along with the anti-reflective coating provide the basis for
compact spotlights with an extremely narrow beam.
According to the company, these LED packages with four LED di in each are
ideal for use in moving head spotlights on stage, for booth lighting at trade
fairs, and for architectural lighting. The LED achieves a high color rendering
index of 94 for warm white and 74 for cold white.
The LED measures 5.9 mm x 4.8mm, and thanks to a glass cover the package
measures just 1.23 mm high. Instead of the usual lens, the LEDs have a flat
glass cover with an anti-reflective coating, making them ideal for injecting
the light into lens systems.
The Osram Ostar Stage is based on the Osram Ostar SMT platform and is
therefore suitable for standard solder processes. The company says that the
chips are fabricated with thin-film technology so that almost all the light
produced internally is emitted At a typical value of 1.8 K/W the thermal
resistance is very low. In constant use the LEDs will last for more than 50,000
hours.
Osram says that the device’s etendue (the emission angle/area ratio of
the emitting light surface to the projected light surface) in conjunction with
external optics is retained, enabling a very narrow beam of light (+/- 9°) to
be produced. This beam is smaller by factor 2 than for spotlights based on
plastic-encapsulated LEDs. Consequently, the luminance of the spotlight is
greater by factor 2.
The LEDs can be used in spotlights of any size, from small stage spots to
large moving heads. Wolfgang Schnabel, LED Marketing Industrial Applications at
Osram Opto Semiconductors, said, “Three versions of the Osram Ostar
Stage LED are available, the Multi Color (RGBW), the pure white and now the
tunable white. The range of applications is therefore now greater than ever
before. With so many colors and configurations lamp designers have a virtually
unlimited set of options.”
The company will be showcasing the Osram Ostar Stage LED at Prolight + Sound

Cree Breaks 10,000-Lumen Barrier with New Member of XLamp CXA Family of LED Arrays SSLDesign News Staff
March 26, 2013...Cree, Inc. has extended the XLamp® CXA family of integrated LED arrays with the
new higher-light-output CXA2540 and CXA3050 LEDs. Optimized to simplify designs
and lower system cost, the new CXA LEDs deliver between 5,000 to over 10,000
lumens. Due to their small size (about 27mm square for the CXA3050) and
brightness of over 10,000 lumens, designers can use the New CXA LED arrays to
replace ceramic metal halide lights.
Ceramic metal halide lights operate at between 200 and 300 degrees Celcius.
They require a tempered glass lens to prevent glass from falling on you when
the device typically fails with a small explosion. Ceramic metal halide lights
also have to warm up to get full output for several minutes. So, in addition to
being more efficient, all LED lighting runs cooler, come on almost instantly,
and do not fail by exploding.
Cree says that the small size and high lumen output enabling new
applications such as high-output track lights, downlights, outdoor area
lighting, and high-bay lighting. According to Cree, the new CXA LED arrays are
up to 20 percent higher efficacy at 3000K and 5000K than competing LED arrays
that are similar in size.
Cree notes that the CXA2540 shares the same mechanical package as the
existing CXA2520 and CXA2530 LEDs, giving manufacturers access to the same
connector and optics solutions available today. Also, the company says that the
CXA2540 and CXA3050 LED Arrays use the same proven package technology as the
CXA1507 LED, which now has 6,000 hours of LM-80 data published. Furthermore
Cree says that the new CXA LED arrays support TM-21 calculated lifetimes of
greater than 130,000 hours at binning current and greater than 85,000 hours at
maximum current.
The new Cree® CXA3050 LED is now the brightest member of the CXA family.
According to Cree, it can enable LED replacements for up to 100-watt ceramic
metal halide in spot lighting or up to 175 watt pulse-start metal halide in
high-bay and outdoor area lighting.
“We really like the ease-of-use and high performance of the CXA
family, and we’re looking for higher-lumen versions to address the
high-bay lighting market,” said Jong Hyun Woo, chief project
manager, ILSUNG Ltd. “The CXA3050 LED Array gives us the performance
that we need together with the high reliability that Cree is known for to
create compelling designs for our customers.”

Cree published three CXA-based LED reference designs to help lighting
manufacturers get started designing with the new CXA integrated LED arrays,
PAR30 replacement lamp, six-inch downlight and retail track light. The new CXA
LEDs are available in EasyWhite® color temperatures, providing the LED for
superior color consistency for designs that use only one LED. XLamp CXA2540 and
CXA3050 LED samples are available now, and production quantities are available
